I found this in the Lotus Software KnowledgeBase today:

New to Lotus Notes® 8.0.1 mail files is a Mail Quota Status indicator which displays information about current mail file usage and allocation.

  3. @Christian: Not new, I know. But you do not have to build it into the software by yourself. It’s part of the software and supported.

  4. eknori , the Mail Quota Status Indicator is available in Lotus Notes 8.0.1, but it’ll work only if the mail database is based on the Notes 8.0.1 mail8.ntf version, it doesn’t matter even if you’re using Notes 8.0.1 client.

So what christian has come up with is actually very helpful!
